Live poker...

I was able to play in a local live 1-2nl game that runs every Thursday night from 6pm-12midnight. I arrived around 7:30pm and the table was one short, so I was able to sit immediately. Most of the regulars sit with $200-$300 and a few stragglers will sit with $100-200. I bought in for $300 and just limp folded the first few orbits to see how the game was playing.

Compared to normal, it was playing fairly tight and passive...usually it's a very loose passive game. In the third orbit I chopped the blinds with the BB and commented that I haven't seen that happen in forever. BB told me it was the second time tonight in an hour and a half. A couple of hand later I get QQ in late position and open/raise to $12 and get no callers. I showed my QQ just to let them know it was for real.

I start raising more PF anywhere from $7 to $12, mostly with suited connectors and small pp, hoping to loosen everyone up and get the game going. Before you know it we have 6 and 7 way action on my PF raises. I raised Kd10d from late position with 3 limpers in front of me and I get 2 callers behind me and all of the PF limpers. So we have 6 to see the flop with $72 in the pot.

Flop was J85 rainbow...no diamonds. And it checks around to me in the cutoff... I check and the button says I have a hand, but I'm going to check. Turn is 3s putting 2 spades on the board...it checks all the way around again. River is the Kc and it checks to me and I bet $25. I get called by an early position player who shows K but mucks the other card. So you can see the type of play the goes on in this game. If you try to run over these players, they will call you down, so you better have the goods.

A few hands later I get QQ UTG and I raise to $12 again...I get 7 callers(Wow!) and I hear the dealer toward the end of the action say "that it is $10 around". I took that to mean someone had reraised another $10 dollars PF . So the dealer starts to roll out the flop and I blurt out, "wait a minute, don't I owe another $10 " She said "no, they all called your raise" I replied with "ok, damn!"

Flop comes out AQ2 and the BB leads for $25 and I put him on a big hand, as he normally doesn't take the lead unless he has a monster. I know it can't be AA, because he was the last to act and would have thinned the field with a PF 3-bet to give himself a better opportunity to win.
I figure he has AQ or AK more likely AQ. His bets are normally very small and in no way protects his hands or gives him value for his quality hands. So I raise to $75 thinning the field to just he and I heads up. If he leads out for more than $50, I probably just call hoping to build a big pot. His $25 bet with 6 more players to act behind me gives all the broadway gutshots odds to call and I don't want them hanging around.

He calls my $50 raise and the turn is 9c putting 2 clubs on the board. He checks and I bet $125...I almost checked behind just to show some weakness, but I really felt as though he had a huge hand and wasn't going anywhere. He debated for 4-5 minutes before folding, stating he had a set of 2's. I showed him QQ because he is a good friend and the dealer rolled off the river for fun...the case Q would have given me quads. After a few minutes of discussion of that hand...he says he folded because he knew I wanted to 4-bet PF when I thought someone had min raised me from the SB. I learned a lesson about keeping track of the action from that!!!

Oh well, still a good pot and an excellent analysis by my buddy laying down an under set. He knew I had QQ+ and I wouldn't have played postflop like I did with KK. The other two options had him dominated.

That hand put me up to $550 ($250 profit) and I didn't make many hands over the next 2.5 hours. I raised PF more than most players and I lost more pots than I won so I backed off the aggression and waited for some hands to play. I did steal one pot with a good turn check raise, knowing the type of hands my opponents were likely holding. I had 4h7h in the BB and 2 players limped in and I checked the BB. Flop come out A35 with 2 diamonds...so I have the double gut shot, but I don't like the diamonds. I check and the first player bets $10...other player calls and I call after debating 20 seconds. Turn was the Kc...I check...player bets $10 again (flush draw) and she calls(drawing too)...I took 15-20 seconds again and raised to $40, and they both mucked instantly. I had shown 2 other bluffs early in the evening, but I had re-established my good table image, and didn't want it to hurt me by showing again.

I stayed out of the way in most pots late in the evening until about 11:40pm. 20 minutes left, and this one particular player always starts bullying the table...most of the players left are the winners for the evening...and he knows they don't want to lose a big pot at the end of the evening and go home a loser. He raises my button to $7 and 1 player calls...and I try to steal the dead money by raising to $32 with Qc9h (junk). He looks a me for a few seconds and calls the $25 with the other player folding. He knows I'm capable of stealing...but its more likely I have a big hand.

Flop cames out 567 rainbow...he checks and I bet $55...he think and calls. Turn is the 9s giving me a pair but makes a 1-liner to the straight. He checks and I check behind...I know he can represent the straight here and I don't want to be check raised. River is the 2h and he leads out for $50. I put him on two over cards to the board, and he was just looking for a place to take this pot away by calling my flop bet. So I called the $50 after a minute of shuffling (6) $25 chips. I had a slight inkling to raise the river, but the prudent play was to call. I know he doesn't have a set...two pair is possible...but a bluff with 2 overs was most likely. I called and he mucks...I should have asked the dealer to show his hand, but I made my second mistake of the evening and let it go.

I ended up a $335 winner...I like the game, but I know too many people personally to play it every week. I usually show up once every month or two just to have a good time. My children are also involved in many activities that keep me away.

No limit poker can be a brutal game...it's hard to keep a good game forever. Eventually the best players have all the money and the game is over. By no means am I the best player in this game, but I do know it is a very profitable game for me to play. The best part is there is no rake other than tipping the dealer...she is always the big winner...usually clearing $200+ each Thursday. Thanks Shannon!

UB Tournaments

I played 3 tournaments on UB last and made some plays mid tournament-near money to get a good chipstack going through the money levels. I made it deepest in the $3r I chopped last night and went out trying to steal some dead money from the button. I typically don't like to get below 10bb so I look for the best spot to shove all-in...most of the time I'm looking for my opponent to fold. I ended up getting called by a hand I'm slightly ahead of (53/47 favorite).

Again, if I play all my hands like this, suited connectors to AA then I get many folds plus I win 50%+ of the pots that showdown. Long-term a winning play(+EV). I hope I rarely call without proper odds in these situations, but raising and putting pressure on your opponent to call in adds the additional out of your opponent folding his hand.

If I PF raise 6600-7600 and the flop comes out 10,J,Q...I have a difficult time making a CBet that would essential commit me to the pot no matter what my opponent might do following my bet.

I went out in 42nd place with the money @30th. I gave myself a better than 50% chance to have a great stacking heading to the money bubble where players typically play very tight, folding superior hands just to make the money.

My play in tournament poker has improved quite a bit from my start back in the Moneymaker days. I have played very few tournaments in the last 2 years, compared to most online players, but I have studied the play of good players and how they accumulate chips. I have never made a final table with such a huge chip stack as I did last night, mainly because I never took any risks leading up to the money. I was always happy to make money, and hoped I would get a good run of cards at the end.

I found out last night that a good run of cards doesn't always = getting (QQ+) Preflop. It means having the best hand at showdown (any 2 can win) or making your opponent believe you have the best hand. (any 2 can win). I busted AA twice, KK once and AK once in the last 24 players. Its fun when you run good!!!

I hope I actually cash in a smaller percentage of tournaments than I have in the past...because I know when I do cash, the payoffs are going to be much higher!!!

FullTilt cooler...

Ok Fulltilt has me in a total cooler mode as I lost $175.32 through Sunday evening and Monday. I am going to take a break from cash games...not sure how long, but it may be until I start running bad in tourneys and STT's. MTT's and STT's tend to get on my nerves though so I'm sure it won't be long before I'm back to Cash games.

There was a big positive last night...just not for my FUlltilt account as I chopped the $3rebuy on UB last night for $537.50. 1st place was $675 and 2nd was $400...we both had almost exactly the same amount of chips ~680,000. He brought up the idea of the chop, and I agreed after a few hands. My main reason was the fact that it was 2:30am and I was very tired. I had a long day at work ahead of me and was ready for bed. He transferred the difference to me before we finished and I dumped my chips to him.

A few hands of interest...Player to my right had been open-raising, stealing alot of blinds near the money bubble...we have 24 players left and 20 get paid. He makes the same raise on the button and I shove from the SB with AJ. I figured I was way ahead of his range, and could chip up some without much risk. He however has the real hand...

I am also trying to qualify for an EPT (European Poker Tour) event in San Remo, Italy via POkerStars. They have a step sit-n-go to qualifier for the $7250 seat plus $1000 cash. The first step cost is $7.50 and I am currently on level two. You can buy-in to whatever level you wish, but the cost goes up dramatically with each step. (2-$27, 3-$82, 4-$215, 5-$700, 6-$2100).

Generally the top 2 from each STT move up to the next step, #3-4 stay at the same level and the rest fall back to other levels or out completely. I played these on Party Poker a couple of years ago and won about $2500 in a month. I played the next month and never made it to the last level. Play at the first 3-4 levels is not very good, but most of the online pros buyin directly to the upper levels and have big advantage over those that play up through the steps. Wish me luck!!! I have played some lower limit NL cash games to buy-in at the bottom level 15 times. I have bought in 3-4 times and made it to Step #3.

It's the Titanic all over again...

Ok...2 more days of play and I have lost another $297.05 over 1438 hands. I have reviewed most of my big losses, and for the most part, I'm just on a bad run of luck. It sure does get in your head and make you believe your game is poor, but it's why we use good bankroll management and study our losses.

Here are some hands that have not gone my way over the last week. Most are just cooler hands that happen if you play enough.

These are just some of the losing hands...Some of the hands it's easy to look back and see why a fold would be resonable...but against certain opponents and certain stack sizes we just have to go with what we believe is best at the time. I make notes on each of my opponents in these situations and hope this info will help me in the future.

I'm going to play tonight and if my "luck" continues, I will take off until Monday.

FYI...A local internet player that I know through some friends, is crossing into the bigtime NL poker, especially on Full Tilt. Last year, he was very successful at tournament poker and won what most people would consider a great annual salary. His time to play has grown short over the last few months and he has switched to 6max 1000nl cash games. I have datamined quite a few of his sessions and have him ahead about $20k over 6000 hands in the last 2-3 weeks. He probably hasn't won that much through that period, but it is possible he has won even more than that, as I don't get to datamine all of his sessions from beginning to end. Keep it up bud!!!

Running cold...

Things have not gone well over the last week as I have lost $335.30 since my last report over 2538 hands of PLO and 100nl. I was due a downturn in profit as I have run fairly well over the last 5-6 weeks. It does affect your confidence which in turn affects the way you play. Sometimes I can swing into huge loss with very loose aggressive play. Other times I will become very passive losing my ability to win pots due to agrression without showdown.

I'm going to review some of my big losing sessions and the big pots I lost and see if a major leak has opened up in my game or if it was just bad luck that I have lost over the last week. I am also moving back to 50nl until I find my problem. Bankroll...$5302.70

I also went to Caesar's Indiana on Monday (President's Day) and played for about 7 hours. I played very well for the first 5 hours and very poorly the last 2 hours. Getting out to play live, especially when I drive 90 minutes to play, I have a hard time leaving when the game goes bad or I start to play poorly.

I was getting cold decked for the first 3 hours or so and found myself a $450 loser, but I had actually played fairly well. I believe my problem came as I showed a bluff to a decent player who played most of the pots out of position to me. I had made more PF raises than anyone at the table by a wide margin, and had received very little resistance. I generally raised to $10-12 PF and would make a $20 contiuation bet after the flop. The decent player usually made a reluctant fold...and then on about the 3rd-4th time, he disgustingly folded 10 10 face up on a J85 board to my continuation bet with (8h7h). It really showed how digusted he was, and I hoped to make a big hand as I know he was about to play back at me.

Then the following hand occurs...he limps first in and I raise with (Qs10s) in late position...everyone else folds and the flop comes out very coordinated...I'm not exactly sure but something like 6h7h4c. With his PF limping this flop is likely to have connected with his hand, but I'm going to stick with my normal play, and make a continuation bet of $20. He gives me the disgusted look and raises just to $45...a virtual minimum raise. Almost 100% of the time you can polarize the range of hands the player holds when he makes this play...super strong or very weak. For some reason, it just smelled weak to me and I shuffled my chips while deciding what to do. (95%+ of the time I fold here) but I decide to set this guy on tilt by bluffing and showing. So I piece together my chips into a stack of $135...raising him another $90 on top. He insta-folded and I flopped Qs10s face up while I raked the chips. I know he had me even it was by a narrow margin, but it's always great to pull off a big bluff.

However, from that point forward the rest of the table gave me very little respect, so I had a difficult time winning pots without having to showdown my hands. The best player at the table, besides myself (lol), sat directly on my right. I had raised 3 consecutive hands PF and on the 4th hand I get 10 10 UTG and I raise to $10....it folds all the way around to the BB, the best player, and he re-raises to $35. I have played a few sessions with him and know he is capable of making a play against me. Looking back now, knowing I have position on him...I could have 4-bet PF and possibly lost less money. But I called his $25 raise and we see the flop.

The flop came Js8s4c and he leads out for $40....smallish considering the $71 in the pot. So I now add AK and AQ to his range and after 2-3 minutes of shuffling my chips, I decide to raise to $110 and he tanks on me...asking me questions about hitting a set, flush drawing, etc and I just stare at the dealer without trying to move. I now know I'm beat, but I have given myself an opportunity to win the pot by putting pressure on him. It's a costly way to find out, but if I continue to call I never know and he probably gets my entire stack. Another play would be to call the $40...but the implied odds of that play do not equate to a (+EV) play as we both had around $350 stack before the hand.

So after 2-3 minutes of deliberation he moves all-in. I tanked for another 2-3 minutes, making it look good, but I was never going to call the additional $200. This knocked me back to about $200 so I added another $100 to get me back to the $300 max buy-in. Oh yeah, he showed me KK after I folded... ;)

I have several more hands to discuss from this live session but they will come later in the week. Live poker is an entirely different animal as the play is much more passive, and hyper-aggression can really backfire on that style of play. I believe it can be very profitable to just sit back and play premium hands and position in this game. A good example is the following hand...(one more hand to discuss)

I live straddle the button for $5 and we get 6 callers and I check my option with Qd5d. The flop comes...727 and it checks all the way around. The turn is a Q and a nitty player in middle position bets $10 and it folds to me who raises to $35. All others fold and the nit calls my $25 raise. (red flag) The river is an innocent 10 and he checks and I check behind. I hope to get a chop and he shows 22, getting no value from his quality hand. Of course, I help him out. My appearance of loose play was going to get me paid at some point. That comes tomorrow maybe...

A little PLO

I played 284 hands of 100nl losing -$5.40 and another 51 hands of 100PLO winning $47.05. I never was able to get much action in NL so I decided to switch over to PLO, but I played higher than normal in a capped game. Each player is limited as to how much they can put in the pot on each hand. At 100PLO, $40 is the cap amount.

I had a good run of cards during the session and received very little opposition when I made my continuation bets after raising PF.

Good play sometimes = small losses

Played 427 hands of 100nl tonight losing $32.30. I have noticed a difference in the quality of play, but there are still plenty of terrible players out there to make this a worthwhile jump.

PF play has become more aggressive with many 3-bets PF. The strange thing about it was that it happened quite frequently against me early in my session. I don't have a lot of hands recorded at 100nl since back in the summer. This generally would mean an entirely different player pool would be at this level as most of the others would have moved up, busted or dropped down in levels. So with a small amount of hands recorded, players shouldn't reraise me lightly without a a fairly good to premium hand. But, I was getting reraised liked I was playing ATC (any two cards).

Generally, this would indicate to narrow your opening ranges, but I was already playing fairly tight with my PF play. So I reversed my thought process and widened my PF ranges for opening and 3-betting. This had a two-fold effect on my game for the remainder of the session, at least I hoped it would! 1) Players knew I wasn't going to be pushed around, and slowed down their play...2) I hoped to catch a premium hand and play it as fast as possible PF.

I chopped at pot where I had another player dominated in the only hand I get all-in on the evening. He was playing recklessly, overbetting the pot, getting other players to fold.

Add this to my session tonight and I'm a good winner. Typical variance that you must expect. The only thing we should worry about is making (+EV) decisions which will make us money long-term...not everything will work, but good decisions over and over eventually profit over poor play.

I made a few good decisions tonight that I believe saved me or made me money because of either the action in the hand, or the style of play the opposition used. 1st hand example...

What my screen looks like...

This is what my screen looks like when I play my normal 4-tables...

FTOPS failed!!!

I just learned a new trick! I have posted my results since starting the FullTilt project. Notice my winnings only show $1100+ but I also have $500 or so in bonus money and rakeback.
These results are only for cash games...

Well I played the FTOPS tournament on Sunday evening, and set out on a gameplan that I wasn't going to be afraid to go broke. But early in a deep stack tournament is no place place to go broke with a single pair. I played aggressively and had earned a couple of early pots, but I get AK in middle postion and make my normal 3x raise...

Oh well...I learned and it only cost me $7.60 to try. The big name professional, FTP Pro, Erick Lindgren ended up winning the tournament and $277k+.

Qualified for FTOPS

Played 926 and won $94.90 in a mix of 50nl and 100nl. I also paid $7.60 in a super-satellite for the FTOPS ($322) and won a seat to the $55 satellite event last night. I made it through to the end and had plenty of chips as I just folded the last 4-5 orbits around. So at 6:00pm tonight I will be playing in the FTOPS ($322 event) with the winner receiving upwards of $175k.

I also qualified for the monthly Bronze level Ironman 10k freeroll. Over 1000 players and I finished about 80 th for $20...Made a move with A8s and ran into AK. That left me very short and I got it in on my next hand and didnt improve.

I was playing for the win and feel good about my play at the end. Bankroll...$5630.15

Haven't played other than a $8.70 18-man sit-n-go for a $26 tournament chip. I placed in the top 5 and won a chip. I hope to use that tonight trying to qualify for the FTOPs tournament tomorrow night ($322 buyin - $1,000,000 purse guarantee)

9 players left...6th gets $14 and top 5 get $26 token....

I run goot!!!

Profited $224.05 for 116 hands with just a sick run of cards. I watched a movie with my wife tonight, so I didn't get to see if the heater was going to continue...I also released another $7.50 of my bonus...another $15 to go.

My FullTilt bankroll now rests at...$5531.55

I had AA vs. KK all-in PF in my first hand of the night and it holds. About 10 hands later I get KK all-in vs. AA PF and make quads...just a sick night.

Slow night...

I won $16.30 last night in 521 hands playing 2 tables of 50nl and 2 tables of 100nl. I decided to try to satellite into the FTOPS event for Wednesday evening ($216 buyin) so I tried to win a couple of $26 tokens in ($8.80) sit-n-go's. I lost both, and didn't try any further. (-$17.60)

I did collect my Rakeback from last month for $127.65 this morning, and collected another $7.50 of my February bonus so my bankroll has grown to...$5300.00 I will probably try to satellite into a few other FTOPS events that run over the next 2 weeks on Fulltilt. I'm an ok tournament player...probably better live than online, mainly because most live events I have played, the players have always been very loose, passive. Two ingredients for being a long-term losing player.

The online players today are very much the opposite. Most all play a very solid game but exploit situations where poor players put themselves, and others in bad situations. They love to steal dead money from the pot...For example:

thebirdman84 has 15 seconds left to act
thebirdman84 raises to 163,220, and is all in ...birdman shoves with a hand as low as (89s)thinking all he has to is get GBecks to fold... If he gets looked up by AK or AQ he is only a 60/40 underdog. Against the range of A8+ KJ+ and any PP he still is only a (62/38) underdog...meaning if he attempt to steal this pot...it only needs to work about half of the time to be a (+EV) play. Probably the most important part of the play is leaving the original raiser room to fold his hand (Fold Equity). If birdman shoves 65,000 on top, now Gbeck only has to call 44,500 to win 127,000 (2.85/1) 25% chance to win...which is an automatic call. If this was the line, GBeck would most likely shove himself to keep MacGambler out of the pot.

The timing of these plays are what make good players great. Most live players do not take the thought processes to this level...I have taken this line of play some, but my timing has been off, and it can make you look foolish when it doesn't work. Then you lose confidence, and stick to just playing your cards. But volume is where you see the long-term results in these plays.

Ready for 100nl

+$22.90 Bankroll...$5166.15

Ready to start with 100nl on Tuesday...I still have another $30 worth of bonus to clear from Fulltilt which should take another 400 hands or a little over an hour of play. I have my rakeback coming in the next week for another ~$130 to add to my acount. This would give me a little more than 3+ buyins of security at 100nl losses before I would need to drop back to 50nl. Hopefully, I will keep my positive play going thru the next month or so.

Remember, I like to have 50+ buyins at each level of play. So I move up to 200nl when I reach a ~10k bankroll. Looking to the future... If I make 5bb/100 hands including bonuses at the 100nl level it will take me 50k hands (4-5 months) to reach a $10k bankroll. If I run better than 5bb/100 then the time gets shorter, and vise versa.

bb=$2....5bb/100hands=$10....$5000/$10=500*100hands=50k hands

staying to the positive...

I have played 2269 hands since last Friday and won $112.30. I did have a downswing of $150 Saturday evening but made all of it back and more yesterday. I also released another $37.50 of the bonus offered to me this month from FullTilt. The Bankroll has grown to $5143.25

I am going to talk more about the PF 3-bet that players don't use enough to their advantage. It's good to get caught doing this on occasion, as it will certainly get you action from inferior players when they hold very marginal hands. I had a good player on my left today that was 3-betting me quite often as I was constantly trying to steal his blinds from the button. Luckily, I was able to outflop him on our first battle which I believe put me to an advantage for the rest of the session.

Use prior hands to set up your opponents. I have him strongly defending his blinds, probably due to the cooler beat I put on him early in the session. I also know this player is capable of making a good fold. So the opportunity to put in a fourth PF bet with a marginal hand can make you appear very powerful to other players.

Good start at 100nl...

Had a good day today playing 3 tables at 50nl and 1 table at 100nl. I played 477 hands and won $124.20 plus I received the Ironman bonus of $132.76. I also received an email from Fulltilt for another $75 in bonus that I can release at $.06 per point over the next 10 days. I need to play about 3500-4000 hands to release the entire bonus within 10 days. The bonus is released in $7.50 increments. So I received $7.50 for my play today.

Bankroll....$4993.45

I won a few big pots and got lucky on this one...It would have been tough to lay down...but he let me see the river and I caught up.
